For many years, I was known as ‘Nightlife’ Nick. I managed and operated nightclubs, bars, restaurants, and other entertainment venues in New York City. I started this work in college and quickly got caught up in the lifestyle. I worked late nights, attended many parties, and had my fair share of drinking and ‘partying’. Let’s just say that I led an unhealthy lifestyle that was not doing any good for my body, mind, or spirit.
After years of working for other people, I decided it was time to venture off and open my own Bar. During this time, I fell in love with an amazing woman with whom I dated long distance for over a year. When the time came for me to sign my lease for the Bar, she moved to New York to be with me. A few months passed, I opened the bar, and got married shortly thereafter.
To make a long story short, my lack of business planning, ego and stubbornness, led me to take on a great deal of stress in my business and personal life. After months of sleepless nights and anxiety – I sold the business. I was not present at all for my new wife, which eventually led to our separation. It is at this time that I hit bottom and began a difficult but life changing healing process; I call it my awakening. A lot of sadness, remorse and crying happened at that time. I never cried like that in my life for so many hours of so many days, but when the tears stopped, my healing began. It started with my estranged wife, but soon after I called several ex girl-friends and other people from my past as far back as 8 years to apologize and ask for forgiveness for my selfish ways. I started to become a better, friend, son, brother, and grandson. I acknowledged how my life was consumed by stress, and status-anxiety of where I thought I needed to be in life. Instead of living in the present, I was living a life that was not mine – consumed by the pressures of our fast-paced, modern world. I was so caught up with the idea of trying to be successful in business, make money, buy a home, have a family and do what society expected of me; I neglected to take care of myself and loved ones along the way.
Several years earlier, I learned the sad news that my Maternal Grandfather was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Coupled with the fact that I never met, nor did I know the health history of my own biological father, I began to question my health status. Shorty after my separation and the move to my new apartment, I started to make the connection between lifestyle, food and health. Literally from one day to the next I started to introduce more leafy greens and vegetables into my diet and slowly started to remove processed foods and animal protein. I went from conventional produce, to organic, to local within a matter of weeks. I started educating myself with books and began watching food documentaries – Food, inc. and Food Matters to name a few. I stopped drinking alcohol and started to live in harmony with the natural cycles of eating and sleeping. I started a new career in Real Estate, and for the first time in my life started enjoying a ‘normal’ work schedule. Pretty soon I was rising with the sun and going to bed earlier. After a few months of my new found healthy lifestyle, I was drawn to the Institute for Integrative nutrition in the form of a lead at my new job. After weeks of careful consideration and support from my family, I enrolled in the Professional Training Course to learn how to take better care of myself and become a Certified Health Coach to help others in their journey.
The program was like therapy for me. It taught me how to gain balance with my own lifestyle and food choices, while designing a life that worked best for me. It taught me about the importance of cultivating meaningful relationships and finding fulfilling work. It taught me how to establish a deeper connection with my soul, and how to take better care of myself, family, friends and all those around me. It prepared me to walk the talk and do the work that I do today.
